Yoga Convention at Yoga Institute

Mumbai, December 19, 2012: The Yoga Institute, oldest organized centre of Yoga in the world, celebrates the completion of 94 years in Mumbai. On the occasion of its 94th Foundation Day celebrations, the institute is going had organize The World Householders’ Yoga Convention 2012 (WHY), a two day event on December 25 and December 26, 2012, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at The Yoga Institute in Santacruz East, Mumbai.

The two day event included exhibition open for public, experience centre for householders, symposium and panel discussions with experts. The exhibition had showcase the pioneering research done by The Yoga Institute in Therapeutic Yoga, Yoga Indology and Yoga Education. The panel discussions including leading personalities from the fields of medicine, education, corporate, and media would be on three topics - Yoga is Education for Life, Life style Management and Yoga in Healthcare Management and Yoga guide to Living life. And the experience centre facilitating programmes like Samattvam (means a balanced state of mind) will give the householders a chance to know the physical as well as the subtle (mental, emotional and spiritual) effects of Yoga.

Shri Yogendraji, founder of The Yoga Institute or the heart of modern Yoga renaissance, had pioneered work in Yoga Theraputics and Research to help people gain balanced state of mind and cure them from various kinds of diseases. 94 years later, his legacy still continues as the Institute gears up to organize a World Householders’ Yoga Convention. The purpose of the convention was facilitating an individual to experience the physical, mental and spiritual effects of Yoga and how it can change an individual’s life. WHY convention aims to empower the householders with knowledge on the wonderful Yoga culture inherited from ancestors. Here ‘Householder Yoga’ is not a brand of Yoga, unlike many popular brands that exist today in the ‘Yoga market.’ It is simply a term to describe a simplified form of Yoga for the common man and woman as institute believes that a householder does not require the extreme stretch of Hatha Yoga practices. Backward bending followed by forward bending till one can even touch the toes is enough for maintaining health, instead of doing a complete Cakrasana.

On the glorious completion of 94 years of The Yoga Institute, Smt. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra, Director of The Yoga Institute, said, "As Patañjali, the compiler of the Yoga Sutras, emphasizes on control of the mind which is done on the intellectual as well as emotional level, we want to help each individual in the world to feel true relaxation of body and mind and learn how simple Yoga practices help to gain clarity of mind and strength of character."

The Yoga Institute in Mumbai till date has successfully helped more than ten million people over three generations through more than a hundred thousand programmes. The institute with the approach to propagate the message of Yoga to householders has aimed at training students with the modules on better living facilitated by experts to accelerate social well being.
